Marathon du Medoc
The Marathon du Medoc is a special marathon. Routed through 60 vineyards in the fabled villages of the Medoc region, this event appeals to the true connoisseur of fine runs. There is no marathon in the world where they, at the aid stations, ask you: "red or white Sir?" Thankfully there is plenty of plain water, bananas, cake, oranges and even oysters, foie gras and cheese if you so choose. Over half of the field dresses up in costume and every year there is a new theme. In 2013 the theme was 'science fiction'.
The course reads more like a wine list than a race course: Chateau Lafite Rothschild, Chateau Mouton Rothschild, La Grange, Latour, Pichon Longueville, Belgrave among others. Accommodations are always a challenge since the 8,500 runners overwhelm the small villages directly north of Bordeaux. If you register (14th of February) most of the accommodations are fully booked.
Wine-tasting and running. This marathon proves that they can go hand-in-hand. The organization is perfect, the atmosphere great. Very friendly volunteers, nice entertainment (bands) and fantastic public. In short: a must.
